"An Embedded Community Initiative" Cafe Roundtable presentation at United Way Worldwide Staff Leaders Conference, Indianapolis, IN, 2013.

Presentation on the two-and-a-half-year evolution of embedding a middle school initiative through all aspects of a United Way. United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County incorporated Middle School Success into investment strategies, resource development/annual giving campaign, marketing and communications, finance, 2-1-1, Hands On Asheville-Buncombe and advocacy. Participants discussed barriers to such embedding and identify cross-functional steps to take at their United Way.

"Editing Visual Media to Produce Accurate and Effective Publications" article for Society of Technical Communication's Intercom magazine 

This article provides copyeditors, particularly those moving into comprehensive editing roles with little specialized training or experience, an overview of visual display scholarship as well as guidelines for editing visual media. Understanding how to integrate visual display and verbal expression is critical in helping editors produce more accurate and effective – and therefore usable – communication.

Problem Description Briefing Memo on Feed-In Tariffs to the North Carolina Utilities Commission

The problem description creates a conceptual framework that increasing state
reimbursements to homeowners purchasing alternative energy sources will increase residential solar energy use and, in the long run, provide greater financial stability by controlling a utility cost. The piece aims to get an issue on the public agenda by considering audience and opposition, understanding an issue and its points for public policy, taking a position and asking for action.

Brochure and Analysis for the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Design of Communications

The brochure was created as an example of user- and activity-centered design, a focus of the Special Interest Group on Design of Communication. It incorporates type, color, flow, emphasis, alignment, repetition and unity choices in a versatile piece that can be distributed through mail or display racks. It also recognizes web and print content differences and makes appropriate modifications, including chunking, bulleting and structuring hierarchy.

"Family-Centered Practice Training" presentation to North Carolina Association of County Directors of Social Services with Patrice White from Bringing It All Back Home Study Center, College of Education, Appalachian State University, New Burn, NC, 2004.

This presentation centered around Caldwell County Social Services' adoption of the six principles of partnership, social style analysis and change tolerance analysis into its culture, annual planning and customer service activities.
